IQ: How do I write an annotated bibliography? 

1. Sample annotation: Citation + Gist + Validity

Davidson, Hilda Ellis. Roles of the Northern Goddess, Routledge, 1998.

Davidson's book provides a thorough examination of the major roles filled by the numerous pagan goddesses of Northern Europe in everyday life, including their roles in hunting, agriculture, domestic arts like weaving, the household, and death. The author discusses relevant archaeological evidence, patterns of symbol and ritual, and previous research. The book includes a number of black and white photographs of relevant artifacts. The source is valid because Routledge is a leading academic publishing company in London.

1. **MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A PROPER HEADING ON THE TOP OF YOUR ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY (so if we were to print it, it would be there)
2. You may use easybib.com--you will need to space it out properly (and alphabetize) on your final document. Please get rid of the highlighted background, too!
3. You should cite the source correctly and according to MLA 8.
4. You should have three parts to your paragraph entry:
1. The “gist” of the source (brief summary)
2. How you believe the source will benefit your paper (what side, background, point of view, authorship, etc)
3. The validity of the source--how you know it’s reliable

Finding Sources

IQ: How can I find reliable sources for my essay? How can I create an AP style prompt that explores both sides of an issue?

1. Write your topic as an inquiry question: don't state your opinion yet!

Bad example: I believe animal testing should be done only in cases of medical research.

Instead: When, if ever, is animal testing justified?

Now, you’ve opened up your inquiry to discovering all the ways in which animals are used for human benefit (makeup, skin products, food allergies, medicines, pesticides and more) and then honing in a few controversies to explore the ethics of. What is ethical and what is not?

IQ: What would make a good topic for a persuasive research essay? What are the strengths and weaknesses of my synthesis essay?

IQ: How can I explaining the answers to the multiple choice test help me improve my ability to answer questions correctly?

4. Groupwork: Multiple Choice "key"
Each group will tackle a different passage and questions. Fist, "chunk" the text and paraphrase. Then, create an answer key for your section, explaining why each answer is right/wrong. This will be done on a shared document, so you can go back and check your answers later.

"Samuel Johnson on Pope": Highlight or underline and vocabulary that's unfamiliar. Then, look up the meaning of the words and write in the margins.

1. For each question: first, identify the type of question
2. Share your answers out loud and discuss any ones that you have different responses for. Don’t just go with the majority--make sure everyone understands why the group believes what it believes.
3. Write the final answers for the group on a new piece of paper.
4. After 15 minutes, we will correct the responses. Whichever group has the most number correct wins!

Welcome Back! Infidel, Part II

IQ: What do the passages I chose say about Ali's intellectual and spiritual development over the course of the text?

2. Get into small groups (3-4 students) to discuss Infidel. 

• Structure of Infidel: Part I vs. Part II: How does the structure of the novel help shape the book as a whole? Why go into so much detail about childhood/adolescence? Do you think it is relevant? 
• Small Group Discussion: Save the Last Word: Directions: Groups of 4, student A presents significant quote and explains it for 2 mins. Next 3 members add on for 1 min each. Finally, the original speaker responds for 1 minute. Then student B presents his or her quote for 2 minutes, and so on. Choose a timekeeper to keep the group on track. 

Two rounds:

(2) Holland’s treatment of refugees.  

Turn in your passages at the end of the period.
